ODYSSEY SHOWCASE PRESENTS
Showcasing Black Experiences / Mettre en valeur les experiénces des Noires
The trailer and vignette are part of the completed pilot episode for an educational web series: Canada Speaks in Diverse Ways / Les voix du patrimoine / Aki Animitagozig
This series will present diverse Canadian experiences and history through narration, music, dance, language, regalia, law and more. Our goal is to encourage authentic change to the way we see, learn, and speak about ourselves and others.
The persons featured in the pilot episode have performed in many of our live Odyssey Showcase productions over the past twenty-three years and excerpts will be incorporated into future live presentations, especially for students and educators.
The title reflects the failed legal battle of Fred Christie who was denied service of a beer because he was Black – an experience that was upheld as legal by the Supreme Court of Canada in 1939 (Christie v. York Tavern case).
