Our goal is to encourage authentic change to the way we see, learn, and speak about ourselves and others.

“Odyssey Showcase “Showcasing Black Experiences” is a powerful blend of storytelling, exceptional performances, and thoughtful programming, making it a distinctive addition to Canada’s cultural landscape.

Under the direction of Deborah Davis, this multimedia stage production offers an immersive experience for audiences of all backgrounds. The work weaves together true events from Afro-Canadian history, shedding light on the significant contributions of Black individuals whose efforts have shaped Canada into the diverse and inclusive nation we proudly call home today.

As a member of the cast, I am deeply appreciative of the authenticity embedded in all eight scenes of the show. Through a dynamic fusion of music, dance, poetry, acting and videography, the production delivers a compelling narrative of cultural solidarity, pushing forward vital conversations about justice and equity in our society.” Jamaal Amir Akbari / Poet | Performer | Arts Educator

“This field trip was incredibly interesting.  I learned a lot about African American History and was delighted to hear all the artist’s sing!  The post-show workshops were great and I was fortunate enough to write a poem there and present it. 10/10 experience.” Lisa / Student Sacred Heart Catholic High School

“The presentation Showcasing Black Experiences / Mettre en valeur les expériences des Noires wowed students and educators alike! Once again, Odyssey Showcase demonstrated the ability to teach history (and tackle sensitive, complex themes) in a way that captivated, moved, and inspired audiences, notably youth. There was a palpable feeling of excitement, pride, and enthusiasm among students from start to finish.

The multimedia, artistic performance was spectacular in its organization and delivery, and should be a mandatory component of the Canadian curriculum. THIS is how we foster dialogue and conversation to create a better world! Bravo to the Odyssey Showcase team!” / Rebekah Chocron (University of Ottawa Academic Success Services)

“When we arrived at the venue, the staff were very welcoming and informative. This bilingual event had an awesome lineup of performances showcasing black culture infused with historical events in the form of short vignettes from the Odyssey Showcase’s six-part anti-racism educational video series which is easily accessible from their website.

The seasoned musicians were exceptionally good, and the singers wowed us with the beautiful tone of their voices, song after song. They truly captivated their audience and involved the spectators’ multiple times by having them dance on the main stage with them.

The post/after learning activities were also perfect for Black History Month. JustJamaal The Poet and Wise Atangana effectively commanded their audience’s attention. Our students were completely engaged the entire time and were encouraged to contribute and speak. What a spectacular show! I highly recommend this event to all schools.” / Jean-Marc Young / Immaculata High School (teacher)

“As a teacher at OJCS, I recently had the pleasure of bringing my middle school students to see “Showcasing Black Experiences,” and I can confidently say that the show was outstanding. It truly encompassed all three E’s: engaging, entertaining, and educational. From start to finish, the experience was a perfect 10/10.

The online materials available to teachers and students prior to the show were clear, engaging, and insightful. They sparked meaningful classroom conversations and allowed our students to connect with the content on a deeper level. It was evident that the organizers put thought into making these resources both accessible and impactful.

The organization of the event was flawless. From our arrival at the venue to the actual performance and designated lunch area, everything ran smoothly. A standout moment for our students was the interactive session that took place after lunch. They had the incredible opportunity to learn directly from some of the performers, who were not only captivating but also engaged our students in a way that left a lasting impression. Even now, over a month later, our students are still discussing the event.

As a Jewish school, it was especially important for our students to gain a better understanding of Canada’s cultural diversity. This show, along with the recommended resources, provided them with valuable insights, fostering empathy and a greater appreciation for different backgrounds. The knowledge and understanding our students gained empower them to address racism in their communities and environments more effectively.

I would highly recommend “Showcasing Black Experiences” to middle school, high school students, and even adults. It is an experience that enriches perspectives and encourages meaningful dialogue about diversity and inclusion.” Jess Mender / Ottawa Jewish Community School
