Justice on Tap/Justice de Cabaret is a six-part anti-racism educational web series which is part of a larger project: Canada Speaks in Diverse Ways / Les voix du patrimoine / Aki Animitagozig that will present diverse Canadian experiences and history through narration, music, dance, language, regalia, law and more. Our goal is to encourage authentic change to the way we see, learn, and speak about ourselves and others.
The title reflects the failed legal battle of Fred Christie who was denied service of a beer because he was Black – an experience that was upheld as legal by the Supreme Court of Canada in 1939 (Christie v. York Tavern case).

This story is interpreted through spoken word poetry created and performed by awarding winning poet, Jamaal Amir Akbari.
Peace is My Journey
Accompanied by master percussionist Peter Beaudoin, Darin Kyle, the 2001 World Tap Dancing Champion shares his personal experiences through tap and storytelling about the obstacles of overcoming racism, and the significance of embracing one’s cultural identity in a world that often fails to appreciate diversity.

Jazz vocal great Michael Curtis Hanna takes on the fictional role of “Cooper Royal”, a 1939 radio broadcaster. Listen as he highlights the news of the day including the 1939 Supreme Court of Canada’s “Christie vs York” landmark decision.
